Résumé :
In their recent report about the situation of birds in Germany, Sudfeldt et al. (2013) state for the Hazel Grouse Bonasia bonasia a stable population of 1.000-1.500 territories. This figure seems to be highly overestimated and is largely derived from expert opinions only. Many estimations are not based on valid records of this cryptic species. In some of the areas that are said to host Hazel Grouse like Black Forest or large parts of Rheinisches Schiefergebirge it is more likely that the species went extinct already years ago. We need to discuss what role rarity committees should play in evaluating records of species with such high conservation concern as the Hazel Grouse and who in Germany is responsible for the evaluation of breeding records of rare species. Furthermore it is not clear why avifaunistic relics and local misjudgements can propagate over long periods and, finally, which methods field ornithologists should use to gain proper data about presence or absence of the species.
