Résumé :

Between march and October 2001, circular sample plots of 50m2 (radius = 4m; sample grid 23 x 23m, i.e. 20 plots/ha) were made in three young forest Stands (mainly thickets and pole-sized Stands) on former wind-throw areas in the northern Black Forest, South-westem Germany (n = 342 plots) and in three reference areas inhabited by Hazel Grouse (two former clearcuttings (pole- sized Stands) and one area of former pasture land) in the Southern Vosges Mountains, Eastem France (n = 336 plots). In the reference areas the sample plots were assigned to habitat categories: winter habitat, summer habitat and sectors with berries. On each plot, Vegetation parameters crucial for the suitability of a forest stand for Hazel Grouse were inventoried in the tree layer (wooded plants >5m height), shrub layer (wooded plants 1,5-5m) and field layer (ground Vegetation <1,5m). Furthermore, all gaps contained in the Stands were counted and sized. The Vegetation and structure of the northern Black Forest areas were compared with the reference areas inhabited by Hazel Grouse
