Résumé :

The dramatic decline of the Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in Central Europe correlates with the gradual deterioration of its habitat. In particular the rising proportion of Spruce and increasing density of growing trees (shading) are responsible for the decline of a field layer rich in herbs and subshrubs, such as is essential for the survival of the Capercaillie. Experimental trials have shown that Pine, much neglected in modern forestry, performs well as a source of food and energy in winter. The needles of other conifer species are less suitable as Capercailllie food, with those of Spruce showing the lowest energy values. So-called “near natural forestry”, with gloomy woods and a permanent canopy, creates only poor habitat conditions for the Capercaillie. Changes in forestry practice are therefore the key to the maintenance of relict Capercaillie populations.
