Résumé :
The methodology employed to appraise the conservation status of the Capercaillie differs from that used for other bird species. This method was first tested during production of the management plan for the SPA “Großer and Kleiner Arber with Schwarzeck”. Within the core habitat areas of the Capercaillie, a network of sampling squares of 200 m x 200 m (which can be adjusted according to the size of the SPA) is searched for evidence of Capercaillies, details of habitat structure being also recorded. Sampling is carried out during the months of August and September by an experienced team of two surveyors. Indirect or direct evidence was found in 66 of 296 sampling squares (22,3%) in 1,566 hectares of putative Capercaillie habitat, indicating a fairly high density of activity. This corresponded to the estimate of a good population of 30 to 40 individuals (2 birds per 100 ha) based on recording inspring-time.
