Résumé :

Cross border connectivity of grouse habitats in the `Euregio Egrensis´.Whilst only very sporadic, casual observations of the Hazel Grouse Bonasa bonasia are available from North-Eastern Bavaria, the distribution of the Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus, estimated at only some 40 birds, is largely known: the upper region (750 – 1000 m) of the Fichtelgebirge and the adjacent Steinwald to the South-East. Within the framework of a three-year research and protection project, the Capercaillie was promoted as a characteristic keystone (or `flagship´) species in the region and numerous management measures were planned and in some cases implemented by woodland owners. The most important management measures include in particular steps to improve and connect habitats, such as the maintenance and protection of old woodlands, promotion of natural forest dynamics to enrich the structure of the dominant spruce forests, and the improvement of conditions for the Capercaillie by targeted thinning. Rewetting of the region’s bogs, which are for the most part severely degraded, is regarded as of particular importance for both grouse species. Accompanying measures include the dismantling of all deer fences in Capercaillie areas, targeted control of predators (especially Red Fox and Wild Pig), the promotion of pine (Pinus sylvestris and P. rotundata) as important winter food resources, and the leaving in place of dead wood and the root plates of fallen trees.
